Dating to the very first few years of the twentieth century, this well executed river landscape was painted by the French paysagiste, Louis Leon Donard. Known exclusively as a landscape painter Donard was born around 1880 in the town of Pontoise to the north-west of Paris. He trained in Paris at the ateliers of Fernand Cormon and Emile-Louis Foubert before continuing his instruction at the teaching academy associated with the Société des Artistes Francais. He commenced his career as a professional artist around 1895 and within a few years was exhibiting at the Société des Artistes Francais where he had trained a few years prior. Although no death date is known for Donard, we do know from dated works that he was painting into the early 1920s.
