Known to have painted landscapes but much better remembered as a figurative artist, Jozsef Balint was born in 1886. He studied art at the famous Nagybánya artist’s colony then part of the Astro-Hungarian region but now situated in modern day Rumania. The colony had been established in 1896 by the painter Simon Hollósy to provide, primarily Hungarian, painters with the opportunity to learn and meet other artists. Balint would branch out on his own around 1920 and commenced a career as a professional painter. He settled in the town of Großwardein, in the Nagyvárad region of Hungary and it appears remained there for the remainder of his life.
