Counhaye studied art at the Academy of Verviers before transferring to finish his education at the Academy of Brussels. Brussels, in the years shortly before WWI, was a lively place for an artist and Counhaye found himself amongst a group of painters that would later be known as the Brabant Fauvists. His brightly colored and powerful paintings from this period are highly prized. A frequent traveler, Counhaye worked in Italy and Spain as well as his native Belgium throughout the 1920s and 1930s. He also enjoyed the academic side of his craft and held a number of important teaching posts. This small drawing dates to around 1920.
