An important and rare example of his oil painting, Stuart Lloyd is best known today as a painter in watercolors. From the quality of this work it is clear that his talents in oils should not be overlooked. The painting depicts a view of Christchurch Priory in the county of Dorset taken from the River Avon.Stuart Lloyd was born around 1850 and became a talented painter of landscape and figure subjects. He lived in Brighton on England’s south coast and submitted works for inclusion in many of Britain’s premier exhibition venues. He first exhibited in 1875 at the Royal Academy and in 1879 had his debut at the Suffolk Street premises of the Royal Society of British Artists. During the 1880’s and early 1890’s he showed an extraordinary number of works and became much admired by the public and critics alike.
His last recorded exhibit was in 1908 and it is assumed he died shortly after that.
