Born in Antwerp in 1835, Derickx studied art at the Antwerp Academy. Here he was schooled in the traditions of pure landscape painting and the understanding of light and shade, key elements of his later work. He first exhibited at the age of twenty at the Antwerp Salon where he continued to show until 1891. The next forty years saw his work mature and received critical acclaim through his exhibitions in Gent and Brussels.
A participant in the important exhibition, `Art Belge de 1830-1880’ held in Brussels in 1880, he is represented with an oil entitled `Orage’ (Storm) at the Museum of Antwerp.
